15 diverse artists reflect on life experiences & creativity

Featuring 15 diverse artists working in a wide range of media, we are excited to share with you our third CommunARTy group exhibition. Reflections , the theme of our 2024 exhibition as decided by the artists, gave us all opportunities to reflect; on our art, on our experiences that inspire it and what we gain from creating it. Our exhibition gave our visitors the opportunity to reflect, too.

What a year! CommunARTy was so excited to get our unique Professional Development Arts Incursion program for Kindergarten teachers and children off the ground with four wonderful Goodstart Early Learning Centres!

Here are a few vignettes of just some of the rich arts experiences we shared over our two terms together.

Powerful sharing of emerging artists' work and stories in first group exhibition, 'Life in Art'

Visitors to Life in Art commented not only on the impressive artworks created by the 10 artists, but also the experiences they themselves had through learning about the artists and their works.

Over the past year, the 10 artists have worked with CommunARTy, individually and collectively, in exploring a diverse range of ways to communicate ideas visually and try new approaches to art making. The collection of works by the artists, half of whom are members of the Deaf community, represent aspects of their lives and lived experiences. All of the artists have powerful stories to share and have done so highly effectively through their art in both symbolic and abstract wa ys.

In the following documentary, screened as part of the exhibition, the artists talk about their 'lives in their art', and 'art in their lives'.

Bringing together Kindergarten and community through Children's Rights fence mural project at Goodstart Flamingo Drive

Contributing, collaborating and communicating - Through an extended project focusing on children's rights, the Kindergarten children at Goodstart Early Learning, Flamingo Drive have made valuable, lifelong learning and brought joy to their wider community.

After learning about 'rights' and 'children's rights' with their teachers and educators, the Kindergarten children decided on six rights that are the most important to them.

Each week the Kindergarten teachers and educators focused the children's learning around one of the chosen rights. Through drawings and their stories, the children communicated what the right meant to them.

Each week CommunARTy collected the children's drawings and writing and, in pencil, scaled the drawings up to fill the 2.4 x 1.2m panels. The Kindergarten children then worked collaboratively with Al from CommunARTy to paint the drawings.

The children enthusiastically discussed the colours, shapes, lines and letters on the panels. They explored new ways to apply paint over such large areas and learned new painting techniques. Showing great pride, the children regularly stood back to appreciate their own work and that of their friends. The children were intrigued that all the passing 'buses, people and dogs' would be able to see their painting. With the fence panels now installed at the Flamingo Drive Centre, the children's work is bringing smiles to the faces of the Albany Creek community.

Growing confidence, joy and personal pride through art making

Darlene really 'likes art'. From her more hesitant making a few months ago, it has been wonderful to help Darlene grow in confidence during our Creative Adventures.

Looking carefully at the sunflowers and vase arranged on the table, we talked about what we could see and feel. With encouragement, guidance and admirable focus from Darlene, she developed her composition. Darlene enjoyed the range of processes we practised in creating this piece and she was very proud of the result that was 'all her own work'.

In her art making, Darlene was keen to take inspiration from 'the garden'. We explored some art making techniques further, as well as tried some new ones, as we considered the plant and animal life we find in the garden.

During a visit to a local art gallery, we admired and talked about many artworks. One abstract, layered painting by a local artist particularly caught Darlene's eye. We chatted about the painting and the different colours and appearances we could see. In our next Creative Adventure we took inspiration from the painting Darlene had admired, and experimented with a range of painting, printmaking and stencilling techniques, all of which were Darlene's original creations.

Darlene loves to create thoughtful gifts for family and friends and decided she wanted to make cards for the festive season. She was very proud of her handcrafted cards, where we explored new printmaking techniques as well as beading and collage.

'Being artists in the city': A Professional Development Networking Event at Goodstart, Fortitude Valley

The bustling city atmosphere of Goodstart Early Learning , Fortitude Valley inspired the CommunARTy arts Professional Development workshop 'Being artists in the city' .

The workshop was designed to develop participants' pedagogical expertise across a range of key areas, with focus on responding to artworks and making art, just as we might with young children.

Across the workshop we practised skills in:

responding through conversation about other artists' work
making our own art responding to the art we viewed
developing continuous learning experiences by evolving our art through stages
and incorporating digital creation.

Art connects us with place, with each other

and with ourselves.

Our creations, individual and collaborative,

were a vibrant success!

Patty talks about 'Stories from my Deaf world', her first solo exhibition

Patty's exhibition, 'Stories from my Deaf world', was a terrific success. We are all so proud of Patty's achievements and

so proud to have been involved in working with Patty towards her first solo show.

Through her work Patty wishes to educate the hearing world about the experiences of some members of the Deaf community as well as support the Deaf community.

Supporting talented Deaf painter to achieve solo show goal

CommunARTy is proud to be working with Patty, a talented and inspiring painter, toward her first solo exhibition, Patty: Stories from my Deaf world, at KEPK Gallery, Yerongpilly in September.

Patty's vibrant paintings communicate about her experiences growing up and moving through the hearing world as a member of the Deaf community.

Patty seeks to hav e the wider community understand the importance of communication through the visual arts to many members of the Deaf community.

CommunARTy has worked with Patty in areas such as:

choosing a gallery and communicating with gallery operators,
understanding gallery 'business', including commission,
understanding the role of titles written in English,
communicating about paintings' stories and developing titles,
creating promotional materials,
curating an exhibition,
deciding on artworks' pricing,
preparing works for hanging and hanging exhibition,
preparing for opening event.

Creative Continuous Learning at Goodstart Red Hill Networking Event

Eager Early Childhood professionals jumped into an afternoon of exploratory nature-inspired Visual Arts and Media Arts learning.

Art offers countless ways to learn about the world,

about ourselves and about each other.

In an afternoon of experimental making, workshop participants were puzzled, surprised and delighted when their handmade, natural inks yielded some unexpected results. Participants were later mesmerized when we merged processes into the digital realm. These experiences offer rich learning opportunities for young children, as well as the Educators who learn alongside them.

Two Big Ideas underpinned this workshop:

‘seeing differently’, and
extending creative processes in new directions.

Participants viewed their mark making through Duoscopes.

We saw, thought and felt differently when we explored beyond conventional art making materials, learning from the experience and from each other, chatting about the colours, textures and techniques emerging from the inks we created.

Participants evolved their process mark making further; viewing and filming through the Duoscopes to create patterns, movement and unique Media Artworks.

Duoscopes will become available for purchase.
